In Stephen Frears’ film—as in Nick Hornby’s novel of laddish arrested development that inspired it—Rob already realizes that judging people based solely on their taste leads to superficial relationships, the kind steeped in a constant game of one-upsmanship of the sort he engages in with his Top 5 list-compiling, frenemy coworkers. They also keep him from forming deeper connections with people, like his ex-girlfriend, who could give a shit.
